Lumber stackers are automated material-handling systems designed to receive, sort, align, and stack finished lumber into uniform packages for storage, drying, or shipment. Located downstream of planers, saw lines, or grading systems, stackers play a critical role in maintaining production flow while reducing manual handling requirements.
Modern lumber stackers utilize conveyors, lug chains, transfer decks, and computerized controls to position boards accurately before stacking. Individual pieces are automatically separated, aligned, and placed into organized layers according to programmed package dimensions. Many systems incorporate automatic stick placement equipment to insert kiln-drying stickers between layers when producing kiln packages.
Advanced stackers can accommodate a wide range of lumber sizes, lengths, and grades while operating at high production speeds. Integrated sensors and optimization software monitor board flow, detect misalignments, and ensure consistent package quality. Automated package squaring and compression systems help produce stable, uniform bundles that can be safely handled by forklifts and storage systems.
Benefits of modern lumber stackers include increased throughput, improved package consistency, reduced labor requirements, enhanced worker safety, and minimized product damage. By automating the stacking process, sawmills and remanufacturing facilities can improve operational efficiency while maintaining high-quality finished lumber packages for downstream processing and customer delivery.
Lumber stackers are available in various configurations, including single-line, multi-line, high-speed, and custom-designed systems tailored to the production requirements of softwood, hardwood, engineered wood, and specialty lumber operations.
The Lumber Stackers section of Online Expos serves the solid wood sector (sawmills, planermills, remanufacturing).
